Program Syllabi

Reading and Composition in the Content Areas

Course designed to help educators guide their students in acquiring skills needed for adequate
reading, thinking, writing, and study in content areas. Emphasis on teaching of reading and writing
as well as
the design and preparation of materials to use with textbooks in all school subjects.

Research Methods

This introductory research course is designed to help teacher candidates see themselves as
researchers of their own practice. The course addresses action research and its use in educational
settings. Research questions and methods appropriate for teachers will be covered.

Subject Specific Methods: Language Arts

This introductory methods course is designed to facilitate the development of a knowledge base about
Language Arts
. National, state and local curriculum guidelines will be examined as well as particular
teaching strategies, evaluation techniques, and resources in secondary Language Arts. The role of teacher
as a reflective practitioner mindful of such issues as teaching for equity and justice will be examined.

Advanced Subject Methods: Language Arts

This advanced methos course is designed to further facilitate the development of a knowledge base about
Language Arts
. National, state and local curriculum guidelines will be reviewed and specific teaching strategies,
evaluation techniques, and resources for Language Arts will be explored. The role of teacher as a reflective
practitioner mindful of such issues as teaching for equity and justice will also be considered.

Subject Specific Methods: Math

This introductory methods course is designed for beginning teachers in mathematics. Includes an emphasis
on instructional skills that advance a quantitative view of the world. Content and skills math disciplines will
be explored. Methods will draw from the subject area, educational psychology, classroom experience,
personal intuition, and creativity coupled with reason and collegial support
.

Advanced Subject Methods: Math

This advanced methods course is designed to further develop the knowledge base about Mathematics.
National, state and local curriculum guidelines will be reviewed and specific teaching strategies,
evaluation techniques, and resources for Mathematics will be examined. The skills and content of mathematics
and mathematical disciplines will also be considered.

This introductory methods course is designed for beginning teachers in scieince. Includes an emphasis
on instructional skills that advance a scientific view of the world. Content and skills of specific science
disciplines will be explored. Methods will draw from the subject area, educational psychology, classroom
